Every state licenses differently: portions, parts, pass marks, what you may bring in, which amendments apply. Each page below is written for one exam room.
Since March 2025 the exam has been two separately timed portions, and since 1 September 2026 it references the 2026 NEC.
Since 1 June 2026 the exam runs through CPS HR Consulting via Pearson VUE.
Massachusetts is the only state that splits the journeyman exam in two: 80 theory questions, then 30 applied questions on the state's own code, 527 CMR 12.00.
Michigan asks for 75%, the highest pass mark of the four states we cover, and tests its own Part 8 amendments and two licensing statutes next to the NEC.

The edition your state examines on: 2026 NEC for Texas and Massachusetts, 2023 NEC for California and Michigan (with Michigan's Part 8 amendments). Questions carry an edition note where the rule changed between editions.
Where the state has them. Massachusetts items rest on 527 CMR 12.00 and Michigan items on Part 8, with the state text named in the explanation. Texas and California have no statewide amendment layer, and the pages say so.
