Pass the Michigan Journeyman Electrician exam

Michigan asks for 75%, the highest pass mark of the four states we cover, and tests its own Part 8 amendments and two licensing statutes next to the NEC. You bring bound books with factory tabs only. These 629 questions were written for that room.

How licensing works in Michigan

Michigan licenses electricians through LARA's Bureau of Construction Codes. You apply to LARA first ($40); once approved, you schedule the exam with PSI ($100, non-refundable). You get two attempts inside a year before you must reapply.

To sit, you must be at least 20 and show 8,000 hours of experience over at least four years under a licensed electrician (2016 PA 407, §339.5707).

The one thing candidates get wrong: they study the NEC and skip the state layer. Part 8 rewrites 28 NEC sections, and PA 407 and PA 230 are on the exam. National prep does not cover any of it.

What makes Michigan different

Michigan-amendment notes on every affected question

For 230.85, CSST bonding and NM cable you see the national rule and the Michigan rule side by side, so you learn the one the inspector enforces.

NEC 2023 · 230.85

Emergency disconnect for one- and two-family dwellings: three permitted forms, including a meter disconnect, with a marking requirement.

MICHIGAN PART 8 · 230.85

Removes the meter-disconnect option and prescribes the exact marking text. On the Michigan exam, the Part 8 version is the answer.
